History of Adare

🪨 Prehistoric and Early Settlement

While little is documented, archaeological finds suggest human activity in the Adare region dating back to the Bronze Age and possibly earlier. The fertile lands along the River Maigue made it a favorable area for settlement. These early inhabitants would have engaged in farming, fishing, and rudimentary trade.

🛡️ Norman Invasion and the Rise of Adare (12th – 14th Centuries)

After the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the late 12th century, King Henry II granted large areas of land in Munster to Norman lords, including the FitzGeralds, ancestors of the Earls of Desmond.

Key Developments:

  • Adare Castle (Desmond Castle): Built around 1200 by the Normans, strategically placed on the River Maigue to defend against Gaelic Irish tribes. It became a major stronghold of the powerful Geraldine dynasty.
  • The town of Adare grew around the castle, developing as a feudal manor under Norman rule.

Monastic Foundations (13th – 15th Centuries)

Adare became a significant ecclesiastical center thanks to the patronage of the FitzGeralds, who established several monastic institutions:

1. Trinitarian Abbey (~1230s)

  • Founded by the FitzGeralds, this was one of the only Trinitarian foundations in Ireland.
  • The Trinitarians were dedicated to ransom of Christian captives.
  • After the dissolution of the monasteries, it fell into ruin but was later restored and now serves as the Catholic parish church (Holy Trinity Abbey Church).

2. Augustinian Priory (1316)

  • Founded by John FitzThomas FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Kildare.
  • A large and beautiful Gothic complex, which remained in use until the 16th century.
  • It was later restored by the Dunraven family and is now the Church of Ireland parish church.

3. Franciscan Friary (1464)

  • Founded by Thomas, 7th Earl of Kildare.
  • Located within the grounds of Adare Manor.
  • Beautifully preserved ruins remain, though not in use.

⚔️ Tudor Rebellions and the Fall of the Geraldines (16th Century)

  • The Desmond Rebellions (1569–1583) were a turning point. The FitzGeralds of Desmond led uprisings against English rule.
  • After their defeat, their lands, including Adare, were confiscated by the English Crown.
  • The power of the Geraldines in Adare was effectively broken.
  • The monasteries were dissolved under Henry VIII’s Reformation (1536–1541), marking the end of the religious houses’ dominance.

🏛️ 17th – 18th Centuries: New Landlords and Changing Times

  • After the rebellion and confiscations, the lands passed through various owners.
  • Eventually, they came into the hands of the Quin family, who would become the Earls of Dunraven.

The Quin Family and the Dunravens:

  • The Quins married into the Wyndham family and became major landowners.
  • In 1822, Windham Quin was made 1st Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl.

🏡 19th Century: The Estate Village and Adare Manor

Under the Dunravens, Adare was transformed into an elegant, planned estate village, modeled in the Victorian romantic style.

Key Contributions:

  • Adare Manor:
    • Built in a Neo-Gothic style between the 1830s and 1860s.
    • Lavishly decorated, with carved stone, stained glass, and formal gardens.
    • Hosted nobility and distinguished guests.
  • Thatched Cottages:
    • Constructed or renovated by the Dunravens for estate workers.
    • These picturesque homes contribute significantly to Adare’s modern image.
  • Church Restoration:
    • The Trinitarian Abbey was restored as a Catholic church.
    • The Augustinian Priory was restored as a Church of Ireland parish.

The village layout, landscaping, and architectural harmony were all part of a Victorian aesthetic vision.

🪖 20th Century to Present

  • Decline of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy after Irish independence (1920s) changed the landscape.
  • The Dunraven family gradually relinquished much of their estate.
  • Adare Manor remained in private hands, later became a luxury hotel and resort.
  • In 2015, it was purchased by Irish billionaire J.P. McManus, who invested heavily in restoration and upgrading.

🏌️ Adare Today

  • Now a top tourist destination, blending history, heritage, and luxury.
  • Adare Manor was chosen to host the Ryder Cup in 2027, marking it as a world-class golf destination.
  • The town retains its historic character, with heritage buildings, medieval ruins, and carefully preserved cottages.
