The village of Adare enters the national Tidy Towns Competition every year as a driver for improvements to our environment and well-being. The origins of the national competition, currently sponsored by Super-Value, are unclear but it rose in public awareness in the 1950’s thanks to the support from Bord Fáilte and the Dept of Rural and Community Development.
” Entry into the national competition is the best way to consolidate community effort and garner broader support” is the philosophy that has been used successfully across the country ever since, with results for all to see.
Lots of information regarding the ethos, competition details, prizes, judging and history of same can be seen on their website.
The national competition celebrated 60 years in operation last year since the inaugural winners of Glenties, Co Donegal in 1958, with the publication of a brochure on the competition and its history. Please take a look to get a sense of the scale of the competition and its ambition.
